Emergency contraception is available without a prescription. Abortion is illegal, except in cases when the woman’s life, physical or mental health are at risk. The spouse’s consent is required. Abortion is currently legal upon request up until the 12th week of pregnancy, the 22nd week for social reasons, and at any point during pregnancy if the woman’s health is at risk. Abortion in Spain is legal at any point during the pregnancy when the mother’s life or physical or mental health is at risk. it is also allowed within 12 weeks of pregnancy in cases of rape and within 22 weeks of pregnancy in cases of fetal impairment. Contraceptives are widely available in Spain.
