Emergency contraception is available without a prescription. Abortion is illegal, except in cases when the woman’s life, physical or mental health are at risk. The spouse’s consent is required. In order to perform an abortion on the grounds of mental health, fetal impairment, rape, or incest, the approval of two specialists is needed.

As an amendment to the Afghan law which allows men to force their wives to have sex with them, men in Afghanistan can now starve their wives if they refuse. According to Muslim law, Afghan male rapists can go free if they marry their victims.
